Being grounded, earthing


There is a disconnection between us and the earth. We have little direct physical contact with the ground anymore. We wear rubber-soled shoes and our cars have rubber tires. We sit in front of computers, televisions, and we’re around electrical devices all day. Our bodies, mostly water, are a good conductor of electricity and build up positive charges all day. These charges can be harmful. They disrupt our nervous system, create inflammation throughout the body, and raise blood pressure.

Free Radicals

A free radical is an atom or group of atoms that has an unpaired electron and is therefore unstable and highly reactive. These positive particles are present everywhere as well as in the human body and can be further increased by stress, smoking, inflammation and the immune system. They become a problem when there are just too many of them.

Neutralizing Positive Charges

The theory of earthing, or grounding as it is sometimes called, is from the thought that our bodies are supposed to come in contact with the earth on a regular basis This connection allows for the positive charges that build up in the body all day to neutralize with the earth’s negative charges. It is known that the earth has a negative electrical charge on its surface. Being in direct contact with the ground, the earth’s electrons are conducted to your body, making it the same electrical potential as the earth. Being in direct contact with the earth allows you be grounded, inducing favorable physiological and electrophysiological changes that promote optimum health.

Notice how great it feels to walk barefoot in the soil? How about on the grass? Like walking in the sand or water at the beach? Sleep great at the beach? That’s because you’re grounded and naturally receiving the earth’s negative charges. This helps rid the body of excess free radicals, restoring you to a natural electrical state. This feels wonderful and some people actually feel a tingle in their body when they first come in direct contact.

How It’s Done

You can ground yourself by walking outside barefoot, or by sitting or lying directly on the ground. This method of course is weather-dependent. Or, you could be connected to the earth via grounding devices that transfer electrons from the earth to your body. These products are readily available for purchase online and in health stores. There are body bands, mats, and sheets.

How long should you ground yourself? I’ve read it should be done for at least 10 minutes every day. I purchased an earthing band and wear it on my ankle every night. The band gets connected to the grounding part of a standard household grounded electrical outlet.
